Open Field Farm

With an understanding of the balance that exists in nature, open field farm strives to operate a productive farm that serves the needs of the community for food, that fosters a positive relationship between the farmers, the members and the land and continues to improve the farm ecosystem.

The open-field system, a basic community organization of cultivation in European agriculture for 2,000 years or more. Its best-known medieval form consisted of three elements: individual peasant holdings in the form of strips scattered among the different fields; crop rotation; and common grazing.

Coir is a good alternative soil mixture because It would be useful to have guidelines on which properties of coir growing media or coir mixture make it desirable from the point of view of soil fertility. This would help in identifying naturally occurring coir chip and peat product species and selecting soil-filling media for systems which have soil improvement as a specific objective

Approaches to soil management including problems of soil degradation and low soil fertility have recently undergone major changes. The former view was to concentrate on achieving high levels of production from the more fertile areas, living the marginal lands for extensive use only. Steeply sloping and highly drought-prone areas were preferably not to be cultivated at all. Soil constraints were to be overcome by inputs; improved crop varieties, fertilizers, chemical control of pests and diseases and the use of irrigation and coir mix soil media used. This approach was successful in giving a large increase in crop productivity in coir media used by open field farms.

Effects of coir mixture on soil

  • Nutrients are taken up in the topsoil by tree roots in competition with which crops.
  • Nutrients are taken up while leaching down to a deeper layer with coir mulch acting as a ‘safety net”
  • Nutrients are taken up from weathered minerals in the deeper layers, with deep coir mulch acting as a nutrient pump
  • Coir of low quality (high C/N ratio high lignin and polyphenolic content)decompose slowly and is suitable as mulch.
  • Mulch maintains soil moisture during the dry season. Especially on sandy soils, Where water supply for the crops could be a problem. Mulch is important.
